Heavy rains over the weekend washed duckweed, a small rooted plant, into Lake Michigan and created quite a mess! Right now the lake is dominated by diatoms (algae encased in glass boxes) which smell musty sometimes, but don't make toxins. As always with any lake, when in doubt, stay out! We have sampled for various reasons the last week or so, as has the St. Joseph water treatment plant, and we all found the same algae, diatoms, and duckweed after this past weekends' storm. #NotToxicAlgae #ilovemyjob
